Bathroom Strip Out — Sydney, Newcastle & Central Coast
A bathroom strip out is the make-or-break first day of every renovation. Get it wrong and the rebuild loses a week chasing damaged plumbing, broken tiles wedged behind framing, or a slab still half-covered in ancient adhesive. Get it right and the trades that follow walk in to a clean, dry, framed-up cavity that's ready for waterproofer and plumber on day two. Oz Demo Group has been doing exactly that across Sydney, Newcastle and the Central Coast since 2009 — bathroom strip outs are the work that built our name, and we still treat every single one like the homeowner is watching.|We work to a small set of non-negotiables on every bathroom strip out: containment plastic on every doorway, floor protection from the front door to the wet area, every tile and screwed fixture removed by hand where machinery would risk the framing, and a same-day skip turnaround so your driveway isn't a building site overnight. Most residential bathrooms come down in 4 to 8 hours. We hand the room over swept clean, photographed for your records, and ready for waterproofer and plumber the next morning.

Our Process
- Site Walk & Free Quote — We meet you on site (or work from photos and measurements), confirm scope, identify any asbestos risk in older homes, and email a written fixed-price quote within 24 hours.
- Containment & Protection — Plastic doorway containment, hallway floor protection, and lift/stair protection in apartments. Power and water isolated by your trades or ours before we lift a tool.
- Fixture Removal — Toilets, vanities, mirrors and tapware out by hand and bagged for disposal. Glass shower screens and mirrors removed intact where possible to reduce sharps in the skip.
- Tile, Lining & Membrane Strip — Wall and floor tiles chipped down to the bonded substrate, then substrate and old waterproof membrane removed where the rebuild calls for new framing or new waterproofing.
- Clean Handover — Floor swept, framing photographed for your records, skip removed same day, room handed to you ready for waterproofer first thing the next morning.
Why Choose Us
- Specialised Bathroom Crews — Our bathroom strip-out teams do nothing else most weeks — they know which tiles come off cleanest with a chipper, which need a multi-tool, and how to strip a shower base without cracking the slab beneath it.
- Strata-Friendly — Every Sydney apartment job comes with the strata-required documentation: induction sign-ins, work-method statements, and lift booking compliance. We've worked across the major strata managers and know what they need on file.
- Same-Day Turnaround — Most residential bathrooms come down inside a single day so your tiler, plumber or waterproofer can hit the site the very next morning without losing a programme day.
- Licensed for Asbestos — Pre-1985 bathrooms regularly contain bonded asbestos in wall sheets and floor underlay. We hold the SafeWork NSW asbestos removal licence so the whole job stays under one crew, one phone number, one invoice.
FAQs
How long does a bathroom strip out take?
A standard residential bathroom strip out takes 4 to 8 hours. Larger ensuite plus main bathroom combinations or apartments with strata access restrictions can extend to a full day, but most jobs are handed back the same day they start.
Do you remove the existing waterproof membrane?
Yes, we remove the existing membrane and the screed beneath it where the rebuild requires new waterproofing or new tile substrate. If you're tiling over the existing slab on a single-storey home, we leave the substrate sound for the waterproofer.
What about asbestos in older bathrooms?
Pre-1985 homes commonly have bonded asbestos in wall sheeting, vinyl floor underlay or eaves above the bathroom. We hold a current SafeWork NSW asbestos removal licence and handle removal, air monitoring (where required) and clearance documentation as part of one job.
Can you handle the rubbish removal too?
Yes — every quote includes a skip on site for the duration and same-day removal once the strip out is complete. You don't need to organise a separate waste hauler.
Do I need to disconnect plumbing first?
Your plumber should isolate water and cap the toilet, basin and shower connections before we arrive. If you don't have a plumber lined up, we can recommend one of the licensed plumbers we work with regularly.
Will you protect the rest of the house?
Always. Hallway floor runners, plastic containment over the bathroom doorway, stair protection in two-storey homes, and lift floor protection in apartments are standard inclusions on every job.
